NHL Injuries Hurting Teams Stanley Cup Chances

The season has not begun and teams have already suffered significant losses of key players to injury. Through a combination of off season workout and pre season injuries teams such as the Islanders, Wild, Flames, Bruins, and Flyers face a difficult course of winning regular season games. With every game in the regular season very important now-a- days teams are at a large disadvantage when they experience injuries to key players so early in the season. Due to these injuries the rumour mills have started relating to these teams through unrestricted free agents who remain unsigned and potential trade possibilities.

The New York Islanders who many have as having a slim chance of making the playoffs this upcoming season have lost their all-star and top defensemen Mark Streit. Streit suffered a left shoulder injury during a scrimmage Saturday morning. Reliable sources are saying this injury is a possible torn rotator cuff and labarum which could cause Streit to miss up to six months. This blow to the team makes the Islanders defence core arguably one of the weakest in the league. Since this injury there has been rumours of the Islanders pursuing Sheldon Souray from the Oilers however, many believe this would go against GM Garth Snow’s philosophy of turning this franchise around. Instead, look for the Islanders to look within and hope for the best.

The Minnesota Wild are now in large debate on what to regarding their back- up goalie position. In last Friday’s pre season game against the St. Louis Blues, Harding tore both his ACL and MCL. Surgery may be needed which could cause Harding to miss the entire 2010-2011 campaign. Harding last year played in twenty-five games which is a considerable amount for a backup goalie. During the off season and throughout last year there were constant rumours of Harding potentially being traded and given an opportunity to become a starting goaltender. Wild management are now faced with the dilemma of how to fill this void. An easy resolution that may be prove to be costly for the team is giving inexperienced prospect Anton Khudobin a chance to become the back-up goalie. Another option could bring in veteran net -minder Jose Theodore who would be asking for a 1 million 1 year contract. With the waiver wire happening today as well, other goalies such as Gerber from the Oilers are other options.

The Calgary Flames will be without the services of two of their top three centre men being Daymond Langkow and Matt Stajan. With the Flames being so close to the salary cap ceiling, they are not expected to try to fill either of these voids. However, with only Jokinen as a legitimate centre now, it could be tough for the Flames to get off to a good start to the regular season. This could leave the door open for some of their young prospects such as Greg Nemisz or Brett Sutter to start the season with the big club.

The Boston Bruins (which NHLPredictions.org has listed as a valuable betting pick considering their Stanley Cup Odds) are perhaps the team with the most injury concerns entering the season. The Bruins are without the services for an indefinite period of time with Marc Savard and Marco Sturm. Both are top two line players but also with large salaries. With the Bruins being projected as a potential Stanley Cup contender this could hurt their start to the season. Another issue for the Bruins though is they are over the salary cap. With these injuries though, the team should be able to get under the salary cap to start the season. It is expected though that once these two players are healthy it could lead to Michael Ryder being shipped to the minors.

Lastly, what would be an article about injures without one on the Flyers and goaltending. Michael Leighton is expected to miss the first month of the regular season with a bulging disc in his back. Due to this injury the Flyers will have goaltenders Brian Boucher and Johan Backlund. It could be a possibility that the Flyers grab a goaltender off the waiver wire or don’t be surprised to hear the rumours of Tim Thomas coming to the Flyers start up again.

We all know more injuries are to follow but for these teams this was not the way they wanted to at least start the season. The Eastern Conference Canadian teams will need to take this to their advantage and hopefully get off to a good start to the season to improve any of their chances of making the playoffs. Let’s hope for all teams though that the injury bug slows down and we can witness as good of hockey as we did last year!

Although it seems like moons ages ago that the Blue Jackets made their one and only trip to the Stanley cup playoffs there is a high level of optimism they could return this season. Even though the Blue Jackets were swept in four games by the Redwings there was much higher expectations left on the young Blue Jacket squad last year that ended up not going nearly as planned. This division is arguably the hardest division in the National Hockey League. The Blue Jackets will need to play at least 500 hockey within this division to even consider making the playoffs.

The biggest questions for the Blue Jackets entering this season include: Is new head coach Scott Arniel the right guy? Will Steve Mason find his rookie season form again? Are their young forwards the real deal? And can the Blue Jackets defense hold their on?

Mason showed promise of being an all-star goalie in the NHL at a very young age. He has already been compared to being as good as proven goalies such as Luongo and Fleury. Speculation also was that if one of team Canada’s goalies got hurt last year at the Olympics, Yzerman’s choice was for Mason to join the squad. Mason is a very skilled and mentally tough goalie and if he can regain his form he could single handedly get the Jackets into playoff contention.

Due to the Jackets having missed the playoffs so many years in a row, it has resulted in them having many early first round picks. Now is the time for the likes of Brassard, Filatov and Voracek to all become top 2 line players. They are all highly skilled players who have showed signs of promise but they must find consistency. The bonus for the Jackets is they have now two veterans and former captains in Chris Clark and Ethan Moreau who will be large helps in the dressing room. Not a bad forward crew especially if Vermette can continue his success last year alongside their franchise player Rick Nash.

The team’s largest weakness on paper has to be their defense. Many hockey experts believe this defense group is simply too slow to play in the new NHL. They do have some young promising defense in Kris Russell and John Moore which is promising. One of the largest rumours in the hockey world right now is a trade between the Oilers and the Blue Jackets that would see Souray join the Jackets and the Oilers receive Commodore. Although this trade may now help with their speed, it will give them a power play specialist and offensive defensemen they desperately need.

A lot of “what ifs” surround the Blue Jacket squad but it’s hard to argue this team does not look promising on paper to contend for the playoffs. A team definitely to watch this season and the pressure will be on many personnel with the organization to have their best professional season yet!
