Hockey betting can be broken up into four main categories. The possibilities are endless when it comes to sports betting, but the following four types of bets are the most common in the NHL. Read on for a brief explanation of each type of hockey bet.
Hockey Money Line Betting
The money line bet in NHL is a simple wager on which team you think will win the game. If the team you pick wins the game, you will be paid according to the odds listed by the sportsbook. The money line is used to generate action on both teams. The underdog team always pays more and the favorite team always pays less.
A typical NHL bet would be printed like this:
The -140 next to Chicago means that you must put up $1.40 for every $1.00 in potential winnings. The +120 next to Philadelphia means that you must water $1.00 for every $1.20 in potential winnings. Chicago is the favorite in this matchup so the odds aren’t as attractive.
Hockey Puck Line Betting
The NHL puck line uses the money line but it also incorporates a requirement that the favored team wins by a certain number of points. If you’re familiar with betting in other sports, the puck line could be compared to a combination of money line and point spread betting.
Chicago -1.5 +120
Philadelphia +1.5 -120
The -1.5 next to Chicago means that they need to win by 2 goals or more for it to count a as a win. Anyone who bets on Philadelphia will win if Philadelphia wins the match or only loses by 1 goal. Chicago is still the favorite in this match but the payouts have been altered to reflect the difficulty in winning by 2 goals or more.
Hockey Over Under Betting
NHL totals betting is a fairly simple wager in which the sportsbook picks a number and then you guess whether the combined score will be more than or less than that number. For example, if a sportsbook picks 5.5, you can either bet on the total goals scored by both teams being less than 5.5 goals or more than 5.5 goals.
Hockey Prop Betting
Prop bets in NHL have less to do with the winner of the match and more to do with specific events that may or may not happen during the course of the match. For example, a common prop bet is on which team will be the first to score. Another common NHL prop bet is who will win the Stanley Cup, which can be bet on during the season and even before the season begins.
